Most maps lie about size. Atlas Revealed shows you the lie and then the truth: pick places on a familiar map, then switch views to see them at one honest scale.
Tap any country or U.S. state on the map or globe. Search for anything, including regions once loaded. Use the presets under the map. Tap a selected place again to remove it, or use Clear to start over. Compare up to five places at once.
Open a country in the Places tab and load its first-level regions to compare Bavaria with Texas or Queensland with France. Region populations are not shown yet because no sourced dataset is wired in, and this app does not invent numbers. For continent comparisons, Europe includes all of Russia.
Arrows pan the map or nudge the selected shape. Shift moves faster. + and − zoom. Esc closes dialogs.
No ads, no account, and no cross-site tracking. The map and its core data run on your device and keep working offline. Sizes are honest to a median 0.03 percent, and where data is imperfect the app says so instead of hiding it.
Comparisons and preferences stay on this device unless you choose to share them. If you explicitly request a Daily email or send an inquiry, Supabase and Resend process the email information needed to provide that request; it is never joined to your map activity or local progress. On the website only, Vercel Web Analytics records cookie-free aggregate visits and coarse feature actions. The native apps contain no third-party analytics SDK.
Each place is projected with a local Lambert azimuthal equal-area projection centred on itself, and stored in kilometres. Every shape on screen uses one shared kilometre-to-pixel factor, so the areas you see are directly comparable and the scale bar applies to all of them equally. Rendered polygon areas match the published figures to a median error of about 0.02 percent; the largest deviations are small states where the outline has been simplified for speed.
Overlay stacks shapes so you can drag one onto another. Side by side lays them out at the same scale with no overlap. Fit inside tiles the smaller shape across the larger one and reports how many times it fits by area. Density fills each shape with a dot grid where every dot stands for a fixed number of people, so an emptier shape is genuinely emptier on screen.
Countries and continents use simplified Natural Earth geometry. Population uses the World Bank's 2020 total for 170 countries, Natural Earth 2017 estimates for seven territories the World Bank does not track, and the 2020 Census for the United States and U.S. states. Continent totals are sums of those bundled country estimates. U.S. state outlines are dissolved from county geometry in the Basemap public dataset.
Seven territories still use a 2017 Natural Earth population estimate, and first-level regions do not yet have population data. Each place shows its source year when one applies. Area comparisons are unaffected. Europe includes all of Russia for continent totals.
